Job Announcement

The Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, Berlin

(Dept. II, Director: Prof. Lorraine Daston), seeks an outstanding scholar for the position of Research Scholar

(TVÖD E 13 or E 14, roughly comparable to assistant professor/associate professor). Candidates from all areas within the history of science are welcome to apply, but current research interests should be relevant to ongoing projects in Department II (directed by Lorraine Daston, details of curent projects).

Candidates should have a doctorate in the history of science or related discipline, a strong publication record, and show evidence of intellectual versatility, in keeping with the broad range of departmental projects.

The MPIWG is an international, interdisciplinary institute. International experience is highly desirable. There are no formal teaching obligations. Adminstrative responsibilities are decided in consultation with the Director and shared with other members of the scholarly staff. The MPIWG provides excellent support for research, including travel funds and the possibility of organizing conferences on topics related to the Research Scholar's interests. Salaries are commensurate with academic experience and qualifications.

The position is for three years, with the possibility of renewal for an additional three years. The ideal starting date would be 1 September 2012 but may be negotiated if individual circumstances so dictate.

The colloquium language is English; it is expected that candidates will be able to present their own work and discuss that of others fluently in that language. Applications may however be submitted in German, English, or French.
