HSS Prize Nominations

The Society's awards and prizes should represent the consensus of its members. We rely upon thoughtful nominations by our members to bring outstanding work to the attention of the prize committees. Please use this online form to submit nominations.

For the Pfizer and Davis prize, books published in the three preceding calendar years are eligible for each prize, e.g, books published in 2003-2005 are eligible for the 2006 prize. The Levinson Prize is open to books published in the prior four years. The Rossiter History of Women in Science Prize is given to books (in even-numbered years) and to articles (in odd-numbered years) that have been published in the preceding four years

The nomination deadline is 1 April for all but the Reingold, the deadline for which is 1 June.

Pfizer Award
The Pfizer Award is the highest honor awarded by the History of Science Society for a work of scholarship. It recognizes an outstanding book in the history of science, and carries a $2500 cash prize.

Book published in last three calendar years prior to the award year.

Margaret W. Rossiter History of Women in Science Prize
The Margaret W. Rossiter History of Women in Science Prize is awarded for an outstanding contribution to the history of women in science and carries a $1000 cash prize.

Odd-Numbered Years: Book published in last four calendar years prior to the award year.
Even-Numbered Years: Article published in last four calendar years prior to the award year.

Watson Davis and Helen Miles Davis Prize
The Watson Davis and Helen Miles Davis Prize annually recognizes an author of a book useful in undergraduate teaching or promoting public understanding of the history of science and carries a $1000 cash prize.

Book published in last three calendar years prior to the award year.

Sarton Medal
The History of Science Society's most prestigious award recognizes an individual whose entire career has been devoted to the field and whose scholarship is exceptional.

Distinguished Historian of Science; Letter of support and a list of the nominee's major publications and jobs must be sent to HSS Executive Office.

Joseph H. Hazen Education Prize
The Joseph H. Hazen Education Prize recognizes outstanding contributions to the teaching of history of science and carries a $1000 cash prize.

Distinguished History of Science Educator; Letters of support and nominee's c.v. must be sent to HSS Executive Office. Nominations remain active for 3 years.

Derek Price/Rod Webster Prize
The Derek Price/Rod Webster Prize annually recognizes an outstanding article published in Isis during the previous three years and carries a $1,000 cash prize.

All Isis articles from previous three calendar years.

Nathan Reingold Prize
(Formerly the Henry and Ida Schuman Prize)

The Nathan Reingold Prize annually recognizes an outstanding graduate-student essay in the history of science and its cultural influences. The winner receives a $500 cash prize and up to $500 travel reimbursement for attending the annual meeting. (Deadline is 1 June)

Unpublished graduate-student essay; must be original, thoroughly documented, and submitted in English or with an English translation; cannot exceed 8,000 words, exclusive of footnotes; three copies of the essay and proof of graduate-student status must be sent to HSS Executive Office.

Suzanne J. Levinson Prize

The Levinson prize is awarded biennially for a book in the history of life sciences and natural history. Marc Levinson established this prize to honor his wife, Suzanne J. Levinson, who was interested in evolutionary theory, microbiology and botany.

 

Any book in the history of life sciences and natural history published in the last four calendar years prior to the award year.
