Description
Focuses on history of exact sciences (mathematics, astronomy, other quantitative disciplines such as astrology and divination) from the ancient Near East up through Renaissance Europe, particularly intercultural transmission of scientific ideas. Students must learn at least two relevant classical languages (Akkadian, Greek, Latin, Sanskrit, Arabic, Persian) plus French and German. Joan Richards (18th--19th c. British and French mathematics) is a member of the History Department.
