The Society: The HSS Executive Office

The Executive Office manages the Society's day-to-day activities. Located on the campus of the University of Notre Dame, the Office is responsible for handling the numerous administrative and communication needs of a 3,000 member organization. The Office produces the quarterly Newsletter, and handles media requests. Recently, the Executive Office has provided guidance and historical background information to newspapers such as the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and San Jose Mercury News. The staff also coordinates with the program chairs to organize the annual meeting.

Executive Office Staff

Jay Malone

Robert J. Malone - Executive Director

Jay became the HSS's first executive director when he was hired in 1998. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Florida, where he studied under Frederick Gregory and Bertram Wyatt Brown; his dissertation focused on the planter/naturalist William Dunbar. His work examines science in the Old Southwest (lower Mississippi River Valley). He represents the HSS in various sister societies, such as the American Council of Learned Societies, and serves on numerous committees. He is married to the beautiful and talented Rebecca Malone, has three beautiful and talented children, and also has two slightly neurotic cats, Willow and Moe.

Greg Macklem

Greg Macklem - Society Coordinator

Greg comes to the HSS Executive Office after four years as Acting Director of the Science, Technology and Values Program at the University of Notre Dame. He is also a student in the History and Philosophy of Science Program at Notre Dame. As a former high school math and biology teacher, Greg is interested in the history of science education as well as the role that history of science does and can play in the K-12 setting. He is married to the lovely and brilliant Dr. Heather Macklem and has three fantastic kids. When out of the office Greg can often be found training (or eating) for his next triathlon.

Beatriz Carrillo -
Graduate Assistant

Bea is a graduate student on the History Track in the History and Philosophy of Science Program at the University of Notre Dame. She comes from Santiago, Chile where she studied History and meddled in continental philosophy in Universidad Diego Portales. Her main interests apart from cats and her rabbit are History of Medicine, especially Latin American Public Health,  institutionalized medicine and history of disease.

Mousa Mohammadian

Mousa Mohammadian - Graduate Assistant

Mousa is a graduate student in the History and Philosophy of Science Program (philosophy track) at the University of Notre Dame. He is from Isfahan, Iran. He did his undergraduate education in Mining Engineering at Isfahan University of Technology (IUT), then got an M.A. in philosophy from Shahid Beheshti University (SBU), Tehran. His main areas of interest are the history and philosophy of science in early modern period, Kant and History of Islamic science and philosophy. He is married to the fantastic and lovely Faeze Fazeli who is affectionately known as FaFa.
