The Society: The HSS Executive Office
The Executive Office manages the Society's day-to-day activities. Located in Gainesville on the campus of the University of Florida, the Office is responsible for handling the numerous administrative and communication needs of a 3,000 member organization. The Office produces the quarterly Newsletter, and handles media requests. Recently, the Executive Office has provided guidance and historical background information to newspapers such as the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and San Jose Mercury News. The staff also coordinates with the program chairs to organize the annual meeting.

Robert J. Malone - Executive Director
Jay became the HSS's first executive director when he was hired in 1998. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Florida; his dissertation focused on the planter/naturalist William Dunbar. His work examines science in the Old Southwest (lower Mississippi River Valley) and he teaches as an Associate Scholar at Florida. He represents the HSS in various sister societies, such as the American Council of Learned Societies, and serves on numerous committees. He is married to the beautiful and talented Rebecca Malone, has three beautiful and talented children, and also has two slightly neurotic cats, Willow and Moe, and an effervescent black Lab mix, Buddy.

Virginia Hessels - Office Manager
Virginia has extensive office management and meeting planning experience, both at UF and in private industry. She received her B.A. in English from the University of Maryland. Her interests are english literature, creative writing and marketing. She is a member of the Society of Government Meeting Professionals, Central Florida Chapter. She receved tthe Certified Meeting Professional designation in 2010.

Matthew White - Graduate Assistant
Matthew White is a Ph.D. student in the history of science. He comes to UF after spending almost 20 years working in museums of science and technology, most recently as Director of the Hands On Science Center at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. His interests are in the history of science and museums and public understanding of science.
