The Society: HSS Prize Nominations

The Society's awards and prizes should represent the consensus of its members. We rely upon thoughtful nominations by our members to bring outstanding work to the attention of the prize committees. Please use this online form to submit nominations.

Books published in the three preceding calendar years are eligible for each prize, except the History of Women in Science Prize and the Levinson Prize. Books or articles published in the preceding four years are eligible for the Rossiter Prize. Books published in the preceding four years are eligible for the Levinson Prize. (More information about each of the prizes is available at the bottom of this form.)

For multiple nominations, please complete and submit this form for each nomination.

The nomination deadline for all prizes is 1 April, except for the Sarton Medal (1 Feb) and the Reingold Prize (1 June). Nominations received after the deadline will be considered in the next prize cycle, if still eligible.

Pfizer Award

The Pfizer Award is the highest honor awarded by the History of Science Society for a work of scholarship. It recognizes an outstanding book in the history of science, and carries a $2500 cash prize. Eligible formats, time period, any other requirements:

Margaret W. Rossiter History of Women in Science Prize

The Margaret W. Rossiter History of Women in Science Prize is awarded for an outstanding contribution to the history of women in science and carries a $1000 cash prize. Eligible formats, time period, any other requirements:

Even-Numbered Years: Article published in last four years

Watson Davis and Helen Miles Davis Prize

The Watson Davis and Helen Miles Davis Prize annually recognizes an author of a book useful in undergraduate teaching or promoting public understanding of the history of science and carries a $1000 cash prize. Eligible formats, time period, any other requirements:

Sarton Medal

The history of Science Society's most prestigious award recognizes an individual whose entire career has been devoted to the field and whose scholarship is exceptional. Eligible formats, time period, any other requirements:

Joseph H. Hazen Education Prize

The Joseph H. Hazen Education Prize recognizes outstanding contributions to the teaching of history of science and carries a $1000 cash prize. Eligible formats, time period, any other requirements:

Derek Price/Rod Webster Prize

The Derek Price/Rod Webster Prize annually recognizes an outstanding article published in Isis during the previous three years and carries a $1,000 cash prize. Eligible formats, time period, any other requirements:

Nathan Reingold Prize

(Formerly the Henry and Ida Schuman Prize)
The Nathan Reingold Prize annually recognizes an outstanding graduate-student essay in the history of science and its cultural influences. The winner receives a $500 cash prize and up to $500 travel reimbursement for attending the annual meeting. Eligible formats, time period, any other requirements:

Unpublished graduate student essay; must be original, thoroughly documented, and submitted in English or with an English translation; cannot exceed 8,000 words, exclusive of footnotes; three copies of the essay and proof of graduate-student status must be sent to HSS Executive Office.

Suzanne J. Levinson Prize

The Suzanne J. Levinson Prize is awarded biennially for a book in the history of the life sciences and natural history. In establishing the prize, Mark Levinson honors his wife Suzanne J. Levinson, who was especially interested in the history of evolutionary theory, microbiology, and botany. It carries a $1,000 cash prize. Eligible formats, time period, any other requirements:
