2005 Annual Meeting: Frequently Asked Questions for the HSS Meeting

How do I register for the hotel?

Hotel reservations should be made through the reservation link on our Web site or by calling 1-888-421-1442. Further information is available at hssonline.org. Please tell the reservation person that you are attending the History of Science Society conference. The conference rate is valid from 31 October to 7 November.

How much time do I have for my presentation?

Presenters will have 30 minutes to read their papers and to answer questions. We will ask session chairs to make sure the participants stay within their allotted 30 minutes.

Do I need to be a member of the HSS to submit a paper? What about registering for the meeting?

You do not need to be a member to submit a proposal but since all presenters are required to register for the meeting, and members receive a discount on the registration fee, we strongly encourage participants to join the Society. Membership information is available at hssonline.org. Online meeting registration is made available in July. Paper registration forms are included in the July Newsletter.

Where’s my receipt?

Receipts will be included with your delegate packet, which will be available at the meeting registration desk. The hours are 2-6 on Thursday, 8-5 on Friday and Saturday, and 8-12 on Sunday.

May I participate in more than one session?

As a rule, no. We can make exceptions for plenary speakers, workshop participants, and for those who simply organize another session. Individuals may serve more than one function in a given session, e.g. chair and presenter.

What about audio/visual needs?

The HSS will supply a screen, overhead and slide projectors if these were requested by 1 July. A ruling by the HSS Council, states that we will equip one meeting room with a computer projector (LCD projector) and a tv/vcr. This decision was made based on the cost of renting such equipment, typically $500 - $800 per day. Prospective participants must have specified in their proposals if they need such equipment. Session chairs or organizers are notified as to whether or not they will have an LCD projector for their session. For further information, please contact the Executive Office.

Will I be able to attend the SHOT sessions?

Yes, your paid registration provides you with a name badge that gives access to all SHOT and HSS sessions, including the plenary and joint reception on Thursday evening. We have coordinated the start time for HSS and SHOT sessions to encourage attendance at both meetings.
