WELCOME TO THE WINDY CITY!

The 2014 History of Science Society meeting will be held on November 6-9, 2014 at the Westin Michigan Avenue Hotel on the Miracle Mile in Chicago, IL. The meeting will be held jointly with the Philosophy of Science Association.

Meeting Program

We are now accepting proposals for organized sessions, contributed papers, and posters for the 2014 HSS Meeting. The deadline for submissions is 11:59 PM EDT on 21 April 2014.

You can read the entire call for papers here. Please note that, for regular sessions, each participant (presenters and commentators) will have 30 minutes, including time for question & answer.

Once again, we have set up a wiki page to assist scholars in finding others with similar interests to assemble an organized session. The acceptance rate of organized sessions tends to be higher than that of contributed papers, and organized sessions tend to "hang together" better than sessions constructed from contributed papers. The wiki page can be found here, and you are encouraged to post your ideas and peruse those suggested by others.

Please read the guidelines for evaluating proposals here before submitting your proposal.

If you are organizing a workshop or other special session, or if you have other questions, please contact the HSS Executive Office at info@hssonline.org.

Click here to go to the submission page.

For the second year, the HSS will have grants for dependent care (up to $200) available, with preference given to those who appear on the program.

We will also have a limited number of travel grants available for scholar outside the U.S. who are ineligible for the NSF-funded travel grants.

Information about these grants and the NSF travel grants will appear here after the preliminary program has been posted.

Meeting Registration

Online registration will begin in July 2014.

Traveling to and in Chicago

Planes
Chicago is served by O'Hare International Airport (ORD) and Midway International Airport (MDW).

A cab ride to the hotel will cost roughly $40 from O'Hare and $28 from Midway. There are also public transit trains that run from both airports (blue line from O'Hare, orange from Midway) and will necessitate a change to the red line. The hotel is a 4-5 block walk from the Chicago station on the red line. For more information on Chicago's public transportation system, visit the Chicago Transit Authority page here.

Trains
Chicago's Union Station is a major terminal for Amtrak as well as for city and regional train service. It is located at 210 Canal St. in downtown Chicago. It is about a 2-mile trip from Union Station to the meeting hotel.

Automobiles
Chicago can be reached via Interstates 57, 80, 88, 90, or 94, as well as numerous spurs off the interstates. Keep in mind that traffic in downtown Chicago is extremely heavy at times, and that the major highways are typically referred to by locals by names instead of numbers (e.g., Dan Ryan or Kennedy instead of I-94 or I-190, respectively). All signs will include numbers.

Also be aware that parking in Chicago can be very expensive - upwards of $60 or more per day.

Travel in Chicago
The CTA provides bus and subway/elevated train lines in Chicago. The nearest stop to the meeting hotel is the Chicago station (Red Line). The Chicago station is two stops north of the main CTA train loop/hub area.

Information on fares for the CTA can be found here. There are options for single-ride tickets; daily or weekly passes; and Ventra Cards, which can store money for fares and offer a discounted fare compared to single-ride tickets. Ventra Cards and tickets can be purchased in subway stations at vending machines.

Maps and further details about the CTA train and bus sytems can be found at the CTA site here.

Wheelchair Accessible Transportation Services
Easy Access Chicago hosts a website with lots of useful information for getting around in and seeing Chicago for those with mobility and other challenges. Their website can be found here.

Information for Meeting Participants

All meeting participants must register for the meeting. Although you need not be a member of the HSS to participate in the meeting, membership will provide you a significant discount on registration fees.

If you are submitting a proposal for the HSS meeting and have already done so for the PSA meeting, please be aware that we may be unable to avoid time conflicts between the two sessions.

All meeting rooms will be equipped with an LCD projector (beamer), screen, podium, and microphone/speakers. If you require any additional audio-visual equipment, or an internet connection for your presentation, please contact the HSS Executive Office (info@hssonline.org) as soon as possible. Please be aware that you may be responsible for additional costs incurred.

Information for Publishers

There are several opportunities for publishers and other organizations to publicize their books and other works.

The book exhibit will be hosted at the Westin Michigan Avenue Hotel. The publisher's brochure, which includes information regarding the book exhibit, packet inserts, sponsorships, and advertising can be downloaded here (pdf).

The guidelines for the book exhibit will be posted here in the summer of 2014.

If you have any questions, please contact the HSS Executive Office at info@hssonline.org.
